Frank Vandenbroucke appointed University Professor

From 1 November 2015, Frank Vandenbroucke will hold the position of University Professor at the University of Amsterdam and become an affiliate and contributor to the European Law and Governance theme of ACCESS EUROPE.

Frank Vandenbroucke is an authority on European Union social and employment policy. He is an advocate of the EU taking on a stronger role in reducing poverty and social exclusion. This was illustrated by his involvement in the social dimension of the Lisbon Strategy, a set of EU instruments aiming at creating growth and jobs.

Before that, he has been minister in successive federal Belgian governments, where he was responsible for social security, healthcare, pensions and employment (1999-2004). He also was deputy prime minister within the Flemish government and responsible for education and employment (2004-2009). From 2011 to 2013 he was Professor by special appointment at the UvA and taught several graduate courses on social policy in the EU.
