John Bowen

Professor John Bowen from Washinton University in St. Louis will be ACCESS EUROPE Visiting Professor throughout May 2016. He will be hosted by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the UvA.

John R. Bowen is Dunbar-Van Cleve Professor in Arts & Sciences and in particular Cultural Antrophology at Washington University in St. Louis. His books include A New Anthropology of Islam and Blaming Islam. His research focuses on comparative social studies of Islam across the world, in which he analyzes how Islam (attempts to) adapt to a plurality of local social norms and law codes in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle-East. His own ethnographic studies take place in Indonesia, France, and England. 

During his visit to ACCESS EUROPE, John Bowen will engage in the following activities:

  • A public presentation on 17 May of his new book On British Islam: Religion, Law and Everyday Practice in Shari'a Councils, published by Princeton University Press. Go to announcement
