Defending or damaging democracy?
Electoral effects of legal action against anti-immigrant parties

This project is led by Joost van Spanje, associate professor in Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. Defending or damaging democracy? focuses on how legal action against anti-immigrant parties affect their electoral support.

Often, legal action is employed against anti-immigration parties. In many cases their members are sued, and sometimes even the parties themselves. Do these measures influence voter behavior? This project studies the effects of such juridical measures against anti-immigration parties on electoral support for these parties in 21 European countries between 1965 and 2015.
